What bagasse is, and why Vietnam makes it.

Bagasse is the dry pulpy residue left after sugarcane stalks are crushed for juice. Sugar mills in the Mekong Delta and central Vietnam generate large volumes of it, and a network of converters has built molded-fiber lines around that supply. The pulp is hot-pressed into plates, bowls and clamshells. The result is sturdy, microwave-safe and compostable in industrial facilities, with home-compostable variants from a smaller number of producers.

Bagasse handles oil and water reasonably well without a plastic coating, which is why it is the workhorse of foodservice replacement programs. For hot, oily or wet food, manufacturers add an oil and water resistant additive. That additive is where PFAS questions start, so it belongs in your spec.

Bagasse sourcing questions.

What is the MOQ for bagasse tableware from Vietnam?

For stock shapes the usual starting point is one 20 ft container per SKU, although some manufacturers accept mixed containers of several SKUs. Custom shapes need a new mold, so the MOQ is set by how many pieces it takes to justify the tooling.

How long does a custom bagasse mold take?

New mold tooling typically takes 15 to 25 days, followed by samples from the new mold. Standard production is 30 to 45 days from order confirmation, plus 20 to 30 days of ocean freight to US East Coast or EU ports.

Is bagasse tableware compostable at home?

Most bagasse tableware is certified, if at all, for industrial composting (BPI in the US, TUV Austria OK compost INDUSTRIAL or EN 13432 in Europe). Some grades hold OK compost HOME. Ask the manufacturer which certificate covers the exact item you are buying.

Can bagasse be made PFAS-free?

Yes. Oil and water resistance can come from alternative additives instead of fluorinated chemistry. Specify PFAS-free in the RFQ and ask for a total fluorine test report on the item, since many US states and the EU restrict PFAS in food-contact packaging.
